Mirroring the Reformation: ‘Dashed’ Religious Books
Read More4 / 18
An early sixteenth-century owner of this book redacted this Catholic missal, expurgating references to the Pope in accordance with Henry VIII’s orders. However, the margins also contain several later annotations, probably added by Thomas Bedall (1546-1644), that refer to the Catholic Mass. Most intriguing is the Catholic prayer for ecumenical unity in the Church that he has pasted to the foot of this page, perhaps as a symbolic call for Church unification.
