Newtonian Music

In the vast library bequeathed to Queens’ by former president Isaac Milner (1750–1820) various books relate to music and Newtonian philosophy, two of which are shown here. As the ‘declared foe of infidels and Jacobins’, Milner believed that a strict regime of Newtonian philosophy offered an antidote to atheism as it forced people to think soundly. Although it is believed that neither Milner nor Newton liked listening to music, both appear to have been interested in the idea of it.
