Music as Divine Order

Dedicated to Emperor Augustus, the Ten books on architecture by the Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (c.90-c.20 BC) is the only treatise on architecture to have survived antiquity. Rediscovered in 1414, numerous editions published over the subsequent century confirmed Vitruvius’ importance as an authority not just on ancient architecture, but also on aspects of music. Owing to the fact that Vitruvius' original illustrations had not survived, the woodcuts that occur throughout this edition by the famous humanist Daniele Barbaro (1514-70) are derived from the text.
