Civil War Discord and Cambridge Platonism
Read MorePartly written in manuscript, this is a particularly interesting copy of the most famous musical treatise ever written in the English language. It is by Thomas Morley (1557–1602), a principal figure in the golden period of English music that flourished during the reign of Elizabeth I. Although successful in mastering the erudite sacred style of his great teacher William Byrd, Morley’s principal contribution was in assimilating Italian influences into his own music through the adoption of the Italian madrigal. By both publishing Italian madrigals and composing in that genre Morley’s influence on a generation of English composers helped bring about a cultural shift in English music.
