Title page of Theodori Gazae introductionis grammaticae
In order to translate the New Testament from the Greek into Latin, Erasmus acquired a deep knowledge of the Greek language. He argued that ‘Latin erudition, however ample, is crippled and imperfect without Greek’. It was in order to promote wider knowledge of Greek that Erasmus translated into Latin and published this Greek grammar text book by the 15th century Greek humanist Theodore Gaza.
