Title page of Apophthegmes
In the same tradition of the Adages, Erasmus’ Apophthegmes is a collection of memorable sayings taken from Greek and Latin literature. This edition is the first English translation of the text, by Nicholas Udall, English schoolmaster and playwright. Besides his translation, the edition also includes his own additions and comments. A year later, Udall continued his work on Erasmus having been appointed by Queen Katherine Parr to head a group of scholars gathered to translate The Paraphrase of Erasmus upon the New Testament.
