Following initial publication of his New Testament, Erasmus started work on a second edition that would correct the many mistakes soon discovered in the hastily executed first edition. For assistance, he consulted published commentaries by other scholars that quickly appeared on his work, one of whom was the young English theologian Edward Lee. Lee, however, subsequently claimed that Erasmus had asked him to comment on his New Testament only to then mock Lee’s efforts. The controversy became aggravated when Lee published his Annotationes, leading Erasmus to accuse Lee of seeking fame by attacking a respectful scholar. Both published responses to each other’s attacks in 1520.
