This map details the outposts and forts, known as ‘slave castles’, that belonged to colonial powers along the West Coast of Africa in the mid-eighteenth century. Through these gateways, enslaved Africans would be exchanged for consumer goods, and trafficked across the Atlantic on the triangular trade route.
