This African Institution report (1823) includes a published account of the hardships that had been endured by enslaved people incarcerated aboard the French slave ship, ‘Vigilante’ prior to its capture by the Royal Navy in April 1822. Such reports assisted the African Institution’s campaign against the slave trade, which persisted long after the British abolition act in 1807 and the French ban in 1818.
