George Farquhar: The Beaux-Stratagem
Written by the Irish dramatist, George Farquhar (1677-1707), The Beaux' Stratagem (1707) is one of the final Restoration styled comedies. Having fallen on hard times its two young gentlemen protagonists hatch a plan to travel through small towns, entrap young heiresses, steal their money and move on. Within a few years of its creation this kind of plot, with its cynical view of marriage was deemed contrary to prevailing notions of morality.
