Horace Walpole: Works (1798)
This engraved vignette from the title page of vol. II of Walpole's complete works shows Strawberry Hill, a fanciful Gothic styled villa designed by Horace between 1749 and 1776. The villa began as a small 17th century house "little more than a cottage", but was developed by Walpole into a "little Gothic castle". Walpole described it as "the scene that inspired, the author of The Castle of Otranto".
