Delivered in the presence of George I in 1717, this sermon by Benjamin Hoadly, the Bishop of Bangor, stoked a fierce debate that became known as the Bangorian Controversy. Taking ‘My kingdom is not of this world’ (John 18:36) as his text, Hoadly controversially conflated the word ‘kingdom’ with ‘church’. His suggestion that the real church is ‘not of this world’ appeared to undermine the spiritual and political standing of the established Church of England led by bishops with the monarch at its head. Hoadly’s conception of kings and bishops as the spiritual equal of those they lead was in accordance with the Whig agenda that advocated constitutional government and opposed the divine right of kings.
