Hughes and Newtonian Theological Debate

Adorned with engravings worthy of a fine art collection, Picart and Bernard’s Religious Ceremonies of the World helped to sow the revolutionary idea of religions from across the world being comparable on equal terms. In place of unique God given truth, this product of the French Enlightenment presented religious ceremonies and customs as the reflection of truths relative to their respective peoples and cultures. Both of them protestant refugees from France, Picart and Bernard first published their seven-volume survey in Amsterdam (1723-37) after which it was quickly translated from French into English for republication. As adherents of Newtonian philosophy, Bernard and Picart perceived the root of religiosity in universal human nature.
