John Gay's Fables
By dedicating his first book of moralising fables to the six-year-old Prince William, son of George II (later the ‘Butcher of Culloden’), Gay hoped to gain employment at the Royal Court. Composed in imitation of Aesop, these charmingly illustrated tales proved attractive beyond their ostensive audience due to Gay’s witty use of satire.
